Pro Bowl could be scrapped

It’s not dead yet, but after the half-hearted display in last week’s Pro Bowl, the league’s all-star game could end of being scrapped altogether.

That according to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell himself in an interview with Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio. Goodell said he has broached the subject with NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith.

A milestone Super Bowl

At Super Bowl XLVI a Bills PR veteran will be working his 25th big game.

Bills VP of Communications Scott Berchtold is working his 25th Super Bowl and 5th in his current capacity of overseeing the Public Relations efforts on behalf of the league at the media center. As PR Coordinator there are just over 100 staff and volunteers who assist during the week of game and game day in areas such as: staffing press conferences, media day, quote teams for both team’s media availabities, radio row, day pass and media credentialing, distribution of quotes and press releases.

Earlier today (game day) Berchtold led the 8AM staff meeting to go over final assignments before heading to Lucas Oil Stadium shortly after. Berchtold and the 100 member staff will work well into Monday morning.

For Bills media relations staffer Dom Rinelli it is the fifth time he’s worked a Super Bowl alongside Berchtold.

Fitz played with cracked ribs

There were a lot of theories as to what exactly was the reason for the slip in Ryan Fitzpatrick’s play for the Bills last season. It began in the second half of the season after their shutout win over Washington in Week 8. WR David Nelson provided a previously unknown reason why Fitz battled accuracy issues in the second half of the season, which were a contributing factor to a seven-game slide out of playoff contention.

Nelson said Friday at the Super Bowl site in Indianapolis that Fitzpatrick sustained cracked ribs in the Washington game after taking a vicious, but legal hit, from London Fletcher.

“A lot of people don’t know, but Fitz, during the Washington game, actually cracked a couple of ribs,” said Nelson. “So after that he was playing hurt.”

Fitzpatrick finished the game and did not miss another start the rest of the season, but the Bills won just one of their last 10 games.

Reed HOF voting history

Here’s the rundown on how the voting has gone each of the past five years that Bills Wall of Famer Andre Reed has been a finalist for Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement. Reed is a finalist for a sixth time this year with perhaps his best chance of making the final cut Saturday.

2007 – Reed is eliminated in the first cut from 15 to 10 with both Michael Irvin and Art Monk advancing. Monk was then eliminated when the group was reduced to six, with Irvin making the cut and eventually being selected for enshrinement.

2008 - Reed is eliminated in the first cut from 15 to 10 with both Cris Carter and Art Monk advancing. Carter was then eliminated in the next reduction from 10 to 5, with Monk making the cut and eventually being selected for enshrinement.

2009 – Reed again did not make the cut from 15 to 10. Veteran committee finalist Bob Hayes was the only receiver selected for induction.

2010 – For the first time Reed advances past the first cut while Cris Carter and Tim Brown were both eliminated, but Reed doesn’t make it past the reduction from 10 to 5, with Jerry Rice advancing and being selected for enshrinement.

2011 – Reed again advances past the first cut with Cris Carter and Tim Brown both being eliminated again, but Reed was again ousted in the reduction from 10 to 5, with Shannon Sharpe and Ed Sabol being selected for enshrinement.

The 2012 Hall of Fame induction class will be announced on the NFL Network at 5:30 pm Saturday.

Stevie still has Bills at top of list

The Buffalo Bills still have more than a month to negotiate a new deal with top receiver Stevie Johnson, but he’s not going to be blind to the free agent process.

Appearing on the Jim Rome show at radio row at the Super Bowl Friday in Indianapolis Johnson said Buffalo is still where he wants to be, but should he make it to the free agent market come March 13th he would listen to willing suitors.

“I’m going to have all my options open,” said Johnson in such a situation. ”This is my first time ever being in a situation like this. I’ve heard from other players that have been in this situation and there are different ways of going about it. But at the end of the day I’m going to keep my options open with anybody. I still have nothing but love for Buffalo and I’m hoping we can connect on something.”

When asked by Rome if he thinks he’ll get a deal done with the Bills Johnson wasn’t sure.

“I don’t know yes and no,” he said. ”I can’t speak to it. I’m hoping they will, but I don’t know. I would think it would’ve already been done so that’s what kind of gets me.”
